Ok guys, and possibly a few ladies out there, I'grand needing to know which rearends can exist swapped with the '54s. I've always heard a 65 or 66 Mustang rearend will interchange, but if I retrieve correctly the leap mounts are slightly off, but can't recollect. I need to put a stronger rearend in both my glasstop and convertible, preferably 9in, just will practise an 8.eight if a newer style will piece of work without mods, peculiarly to the car.

Jeff,I used a early Mustang 8" under the wagon and I did have to relocate the jump mounts.

i am unaware of any rear beam that only bolts upwards but if you are wanting a 9" your best bet is the 57 to 59 Ford and the bolt pattern volition exist correct as the width will exist 57 one/iv" wide...aforementioned as the early Mustang.

A 1969 to 1977 Granada 8" rear axle is 56 1/2" wide.

The 57-59 Ford nine" is getting harder to observe and pricey here is a popular culling the Ford Explorer viii.eight also institute in some Rangers these are mutual to detect in a lot of U-Pull-Information technology yards for under $200 they besides are ordinarily already Posi units. Here are some links you might desire to read up on considering they are EZ to narrow and give your '54 more tire clearance for those narrow rear wheel wells.

And this link will tell you how to read the VIN tag to see what the ratio is and if information technology's a locker and what widths they are these rears also have the same commodities design as the '54:

Down side to those viii" rears are most none are Posi/Lockers and the parts are getting harder to come up past since the afterwards Mustangs employ eight.viii's the parts and upgrades are easily available.

When installing the newer 8 & 9" rearends in that location is no need to relocate the spring mounts. Employ 2 pieces of 2" wide steel bar stock equally long equally the jump mounts. Thickness depends on if you desire to lower your car. Drill a hole for dowel pin (locator) one on side to locate bar stock on axle. Drill offset hole on other side to center beam on springs. Install dowels to pin axle in place and have longer U bolts made. No take a chance of warping rearend housing and ruining bearings. Hope this helps. Richard

OK guys, Cheers very much. That's what I was thinking on the swaps, then I've got plenty of options, which is good. Information technology's been 25 years since I've actively messed with these ol 54's and so I've forgotten some stuff, possibly due to partaking in too many developed beverages over the years or maybe information technology's just age lol. Plus I don't have my father now to rely on his knowledge and expertise to help me. When I drove my convertible back in the tardily eighty's I was e'er wanting to put a stronger rearend under it, cause someone who shall remain nameless  , had a habit of tearing upwards the stock rearends. I happen to have a 57 9in rearend housing and the guy who painted my convertible originally for my dad back in '63 still runs a save thou where all I take to do is get and get the rearend out of an exploder or ranger and put it on my account :D. I also have 8.8 posi rearend out of a pull a fast one on body stang, that I can swipe the posi unit out of if need exist. Then I'm in pretty good shape, but demand to decide which mode I wanna go.

Im using a Granada viii inch rear in mine with iv:11 gears. I haven't managed to rip it out yet with my stout 351 Cleveland! Could exist because it breaks traction before information technology breaks parts...

I put a 57 rear in my 54. Bolt in, leap mounts were no problem but seemed to be near a ane/2 inch off.

Was over to the salvage one thousand owned by the guy who painted my convertible for my dad back in 63 talking to one of my oldest friends and we got besides talking about rearends and estimate what? I've got an viii.8 out of a 98 explorer if I want it, just got to take information technology out, not sure of ratio yet or if it'southward posi but that doesn't really matter since got posi unit of measurement already and can purchase whatever ratio I want. Plus to top it off, can also go 3.fifty 9in posi unit if I want for the 57 rearend if I decide to get that route. And then it was a pretty skilful day, even if I didn't get the plough signal switch changed in my mom'southward car :D.

I take the 8.8" from a '98 Explorer in my '54. I had to narrow it but information technology was really easy. It fits great and though I haven't driven the car yet, I'thou excited about the posi and disc brakes. Doing those upgrades to the Mustang 9" I had in there before would have been really expensive, plus that rearend was a little too narrow for the car.
